The Fatal Flaw: Why You Sound "Too Salesy"
Most people fail at cold calling because they approach it as a transaction rather than a conversation. Anthony points out that the "salesy" tone fast-talking, overly enthusiastic, and scripted is a massive red flag for prospects.
When you sound like a salesperson, you trigger a "fight or flight" response. To fix this, you must shift your focus from closing a deal to opening a door. Most cold callers barge into someone's day. Anthony advocates for Permission-Led Sales. Using phrases like, "I don't suppose you could help me?" or "Have you got a moment for me to explain why I've reached out to you specifically?" shifts the power dynamic.
- The Result: The prospect feels respected.
- The Psychology: When someone grants you permission to speak, they are subconsciously more inclined to listen to what you have to say.
2. The TFR Method (Take Final Responsibility)
This is perhaps the most "no-fluff" piece of advice Anthony offers. In sales, we often say, "I'll leave it with you," or "Let me know when you're free." This is a mistake.
The TFR Method dictates that the salesperson should always own the next step. Instead of waiting for a call that will never come, say:
"I'll send that info over now. If I haven't heard back by Thursday at 10:00 AM, I’ll give you a quick ring just to make sure it didn't end up in your junk folder."
This positions you as a professional providing a service, rather than a solicitor waiting for a handout.
3. Understanding the "Psychology of the No"
Anthony explains that a "No" on a cold call usually isn't a rejection of your product, it's a rejection of the interruption. By changing your mindset to realise that "No" just means "Not right now" or "I don't understand yet," you can maintain the confidence needed to keep your activity levels high.
Navigating the "Gatekeeper"
Many sales reps view receptionists and PAs as barriers. In the podcast, Anthony rebrands them as "Information Hubs." Instead of trying to "get past" them, try to enlist their help. Ask them for advice on the best way to approach the person you're trying to reach. Often, they will give you the exact "hook" you need to get the decision-maker to take your call.
