You care a lot about your business. But when you look at your team… it doesn’t always feel like they care the same way.
They show up. They get the job done (mostly), but there’s no spark, drive or ownership.
And it’s frustrating because you’re still carrying the weight of the business on your shoulders.
Sound familiar?
I’ve worked with a lot of business owners, and this comes up more often than you’d think.
You're not imagining it. There is a gap, and no, the answer isn’t to hire “better people” or do a team away day at Go Ape.
It’s rarely a people problem. It’s a culture problem.
Here’s what’s usually missing:
✅ A clear vision of where the business is going (that’s shared with the team)
✅ Defined standards of how we work, behave, and make decisions
✅ Accountability: real, consistent follow-through
✅ Recognition: people knowing when they’re doing well
✅ A sense of ownership: not just showing up for a pay cheque
You set the tone.
If you're firefighting, unclear on direction, or tolerating poor performance, your team mirrors that.
If you're focused, accountable, and driven by purpose, they will be too (but not overnight).
The culture of a business is built from the top down, not the bottom up.
When you get this right, everything becomes easier. Productivity increases. Morale improves. Clients notice. Margins go up. Retention gets easier.
So what can you do about it?
Start by asking yourself:
• Does everyone in my team know what success looks like?
• Do they know where the business is going, and their role in it?
• Are we holding ourselves (and each other) to consistent standards?
• Do people feel seen and valued or just managed?
One tool I always bring into the mix is a DISC assessment.
If you’ve not heard of DISC before, it’s a behavioural assessment that helps you understand how people communicate, make decisions, and interact under pressure.
I use it with every single one of my clients.
We run assessments on current team members and on potential new hires because the insight it gives is a game-changer.
It tells us things like:
- • Why certain team members clash or misunderstand each other
- • Where someone thrives (and where they don’t)
- • How to adapt your leadership to get the best out of each person
- • Whether a new hire is going to be the right fit culturally
And when you combine DISC with a clear vision and solid plan, you start building a team that doesn’t just care more, they perform better.
If that sounds like something your business could benefit from, I’d love to talk about how we can help you.
Culture doesn’t shift by chance. It changes when you decide to lead differently and start bringing your team on the journey with you.
