One of the biggest mistakes I see business owners make isn’t failing to win enough opportunities...
It is failing to follow up after they have sent a proposal.
Many people treat hitting 'send' as the end of the sales process.
It isn't.
The sale rarely ends when the proposal is sent, it often starts there.
I often ask coaching clients:
- What do you believe happens after you send a proposal?
- Why do you assume a prospect has not responded?
- Are you avoiding following up because you do not want to appear "pushy"?
The answers are usually revealing.
Many people assume silence means "they are not interested."
But what if they are simply:
✔️ Busy?
✔️ Waiting for approval?
✔️ Comparing options?
✔️ Unsure about something?
✔️ Distracted by other priorities?
The truth is, we don't know until we ask. The best salespeople do not follow up to chase. They follow up to help.
A good follow-up might:
- Answer unanswered questions
- Clarify misunderstandings
- Share a relevant case study
- Explain what implementation looks like
- Reduce the customer's perceived risk
In other words, it helps the prospect make a confident decision.
Here is another question I ask clients:
What's easier, finding a brand new lead or converting someone who has already asked you for a proposal?
For many businesses, the quickest way to grow sales isn't generating more leads. It's improving what happens after the proposal has been sent.
So, here is a question for you:
Do yu have a structured follow-up process, or are you relying on your memory and hoping your prospects come back to you?
