When people think about successful business owners, there’s often an assumption that they’re always “on”.
Working late. Checking emails. Constantly pushing.
But in reality, the most successful people I work with across East Anglia do something different.
They know when to switch off.
Because they understand that how you spend your time outside of the business, including your evenings and weekends, has a direct impact on how you show up within it.
“Burnout is not the price you have to pay for success.” — Arianna Huffington
Why switching off matters
There’s a limit to how much productivity you can squeeze out of yourself.
A Stanford University study found that productivity drops significantly once you exceed 50 hours a week. Beyond 55 hours, the output becomes so low that working more is almost pointless.
The World Health Organisation has also linked long working hours to increased risks of heart disease and stroke.
The takeaway is simple.
Success doesn’t come from working more. It comes from working better, and that requires rest.
How to make the most of your downtime
Here are a few habits I see consistently in business owners who perform at a high level without burning out.
1. Prioritise recharging
Successful business owners don’t treat rest as a reward. They treat it as part of the plan.
That might be spending time outdoors, cooking, reading, or simply doing nothing for a while.
I often see business owners who struggle to switch off at first. But once they do, they come back sharper, clearer, and far more effective.
2. Set boundaries with work
One of the biggest challenges for business owners is knowing when to stop.
There’s always something else to do.
But the most effective leaders set clear boundaries around their time. That might mean no emails after a certain point of the day, or keeping weekends mostly work-free.
Not because they don’t care, but because they understand the long-term impact of burnout.
3. Move your body
If you spend most of your week at a desk, the weekend is your chance to reset physically as well as mentally.
Whether it’s a walk, the gym, a class, or something more social like sport, movement helps reduce stress and improve energy levels.
And that energy carries into your working week.
4. Spend time with the people who matter
It’s easy for relationships to take a back seat when the business is demanding your attention.
But strong personal relationships play a big role in resilience, perspective, and overall wellbeing.
The business owners who sustain success long-term are usually the ones who have balance outside of it.
5. Make time for your interests
Your business might be a big part of your life, but it shouldn’t be the only part.
Hobbies and personal interests help you think differently, recharge mentally, and bring fresh ideas back into the business.
Sometimes your best ideas don’t come when you’re working. They come when you’ve stepped away.
6. Prepare for the week ahead
The most productive business owners don’t wait until Monday morning to get organised.
They take a small amount of time over the weekend to plan ahead.
That might be reviewing priorities, mapping out the week, or simply getting clear on what matters most.
It reduces stress and helps you start the week with focus rather than reacting to whatever comes your way.
Bringing it all together
How you spend your weekend and downtime has a bigger impact on your business than you might think.
If you’re constantly working, you might feel productive in the short term, but it’s difficult to sustain.
The business owners who perform best over time are the ones who build in time to rest, reset, and think clearly.
Because when you’re at your best, your business tends to be as well.
Want to create more balance in your business?
If you’re finding it hard to switch off, or feel like the business is relying too heavily on you, it might be time to look at how things are structured.
