The Art Of Forward-Moving Conversations

We’ve all been there, a meeting or one-on-one that feels a bit like a hamster wheel: Lots of talking, but not much being said. You leave wondering, “Did anything actually get done?”

People can leave meetings unclear on:

  • What actually changed
  • What they are responsible for
  • What happens next

This is where forward-moving conversations come in. Think of them as a skill you can learn and develop, like a muscle...The more you practice, the more natural it becomes, and the easier it is to keep conversations productive without feeling forced. Put your insights into action, and remember to sign up to our mailing list at the end of this blog to get the cheat sheet.

In business coaching, a forward-moving conversation is about guiding the dialogue so that insight becomes action, reflection leads to next steps, and talking is productive.

When done well, all your conversations will become more purposeful, both in your professional and personal life.

What are forward-moving conversations?

Forward-moving conversations are, as the name suggests, conversations that move you forward. They focus on goals, plans, timelines, and projections, helping you stay aligned with what truly matters, rather than drifting into small talk, like asking about the health of a pet goldfish.

They focus on goals, instead of blame. For example, rather than asking, “Why didn’t the client respond?” try, “What’s the next step to re-engage the client constructively?”

These conversations shift from problems to solutions. Acknowledge the challenges briefly, and then move toward practical solutions. For example, if a process feels inefficient, you could ask, “What’s one tweak we could test this week to make it run smoother?”

Forward-moving conversations link insight to action. Make sure each takeaway has a clear next step attached. If a colleague shares feedback on a report, you could ask, “Which part should I adjust first to make it stronger?”

These conversations encourage accountability. Wrap up your meetings with clarity on who will do what and by when. Even in a casual check-in with a mentor, a simple, “Which step will you try first, and when shall we revisit?”

Forward-moving conversations are a leadership tool, designed to streamline processes and turn conversations into meaningful, valuable exchanges. When leaders use them with their teams, meetings become more energising, clear, and aligned with real outcomes.

Try it yourself with this exercise

Pick a conversation that recently felt stuck, stilted, or unproductive. Jot down a brief overview of it, and as you lay it out, you’ll likely notice the moment or comment that caused it to stall. Doing this regularly will help you identify patterns in how you communicate, and equipping yourself with a few forward-moving conversation questions can help you prevent stalled conversations in the future.

Here are a few forward-moving questions to keep in your back pocket:

“What’s the smallest step we could take right now to move this forward?”

“Which part of this process could we tweak immediately?”

“Who will take ownership, and by when?”

“Which part of this is most important to focus on first?”

Now that we’ve given you a few examples of these questions, reflect on your previous conversation. How might it have felt different if these questions were used?
